Spike Spikes are instantaneous increase in voltage. A spike can enter electronic equipments through power grid, network and phone line. Spikes can be caused by such things as a nearby lightning strike or when utility power comes back on line after failure. Surge Surges are sudden transient increase in voltage (1/120 of a second). Surges are commonly created by immediate reduction of consuming electrical power on large electrical machines. Because the extra power that these machines were using is then released back into the utility lines.
Load regulation is the ability to maintain specified output voltage over changes in the value of the load (zero to full load). Line regulation is the ability of the power supply to maintain its specified output voltage over changes in the input line voltage. It is expressed as percent of change in the output voltage relative to the change in the input line voltage.
A Constant-Voltage (CV) supply provides a DC voltage that can be set to any desired value over a specified range. A constant-current (CC) supply gives a regulated current independent of the voltage over the load.
Power Factor Correction or PFC is to improve the ratio of apparent power to real power. The power factor is around 0.4~0.6 in non-PFC models. In models with PFC circuit, the power factor can reach above 0.95. The calculation formulas are as follows: Apparent Power=Input Voltage x Input Current (VA), Real Power= Input Voltage x Input Current x Power Factor (W). POWERTRON make SMPS has inbuilt PFC above 800W/1000W power.
